# Reading a sector time like an engineer

A sector time is a summary of somewhere between twenty and forty seconds of driving compressed into one number. Treating it as feedback is like judging an essay by its word count.

It is still the most available data most of us have, so it is worth knowing what it can and cannot tell you.

## What a sector actually contains

A typical sector holds three or four corners, a straight or two, and a handful of transitions. If you are two tenths down, that deficit could be one bad corner or four mediocre ones, and those need completely different responses.

So the first rule: a sector time locates a problem to within about thirty seconds of lap. It does not diagnose it.

## The colours mean less than you think

Purple means fastest overall, green means your personal best, yellow means neither. Useful at a glance, misleading over a session.

A purple sector set on lap two of a stint on fresh rubber tells you almost nothing about your race pace. A yellow sector on lap eighteen might be a better lap than either.

Colours are relative to a reference that keeps moving. When you are analysing rather than racing, turn them off in your head and read the numbers.

## Getting from where to why

Three techniques, in increasing order of effort.

**Split the sector yourself.** Most tools let you set custom timing lines. Put one either side of the corner you suspect. Suddenly you have a two-second window instead of a thirty-second one, and a two-second window is diagnosable.

**Compare speed traces, not times.** A delta plot tells you where the gap opens. Where it opens is rarely where the problem is: losing time on a straight almost always means you lost it at the corner before, and the straight is just the invoice.

**Look at minimum corner speed and the shape either side of it.** Two drivers can post the same corner time with completely different profiles — one braking late and rolling less speed, one braking early and carrying more. Only one of those is repeatable on lap thirty.

## The habit worth building

When you see a slow sector, resist the urge to attack the whole thing harder next lap. That is how a small deficit in one corner becomes a large deficit spread across four.

Pick one corner. Change one thing. Run five laps. Compare the split for that corner only, and ignore the rest of the sector entirely.

It is slow, unglamorous work, and it is the difference between drivers who improve and drivers who just accumulate laps.
